CROZES-HERMITAGE TO CROW ABOUT
Behind the very famous, and equally expensive Syrah-covered steep Hermitage hillside in the northern Rhone, are the gently-sloped vineyards of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. A tad less complex, but coming from a well-respected grower such as Luc Tardy, it is much more affordable. The Tardy family have been engaged in viticulture at their Domaine du Murinais for over 150 years. Only in 1998 did Luc, current generation of the family, start bottling their wines. This is Syrah at its finest. Pepper and cassis underpinned by a pleasant smokiness dominate. Yet it is ripe with nuances of oak and a light meatiness. A wine for aging up to 10 years, it is delicious now. Decant for half an hour and serve with prime rib. Wine Align rated it 93 points with a glowing commentary.
