LET’S DO DOGLIANI
Dolcetto is the primary red grape variety planted in the Dogliani appellation of Piemonte, Italy. The wine used to be labelled Dolcetto di Dogliani. But the Dolcetto grape is also planted in 11 neighbouring appellations with a lower quality reputation. In order to avoid confusion and set themselves apart, in cooperation and consultation with producers in the region, the Dolcetto grape name was dropped in favour of a new upgraded appellation of Dogliani DOCG. Still always made with the Dolcetto grape, by adding the extra G, representing Garantia, to DOC to form DOCG, new elevated quality and production standards were established and enforced. The producer, Bricco Rosso Estate, is a benchmark producer in this appellation. Clocking in at 92 points, Stephen Brook in Decanter Magazine commented: ”…savoury black fruit nose….rich, succulent….invigorating and long.” Bring on the pulled pork sandwiches.
