STAR FROM THE SAAR SHINES FAR
The Saar tributary of Germany’s Mosel River has riveting white wines to offer the world. They are among the finest, delicate, ageable white wines in the world. The Scharzhofberger vineyard, classified as an Erste Lage (First Growth), is so famous that it doesn’t even carry the village name of Wiltingen. The Kesselstatt Esate is only one of four owners. And it’s all planted to Riesling, naturally. 2015 was the perfect vintage, although quantities harvested were a lot less than normal. Crisp and delicate, the bouquet gives us hints of forest fruits and black currants. There is a beautiful balance between its crispness and ever-so-gentle sweetness. This wine will age gracefully for 10 years, if you can control yourself to wait that long. Lay down a few bottles and try. Sip solo, or pair with lighter dishes – shrimp with lemon-grass, curries, sushi with wasabi sauce or soy sauce and scallops come to mind. Every major publication gave it 90 points or more.
