THE BEST IS THE LEAST WE CAN OFFER
The Decanter World Wine Awards, DWWA for short, has got to be one of the toughest wine competitions in the world.
“Best of Show” and 97 points is about the best endorsement that a bottle of red wine could receive. The Decanter World Wine Awards, DWWA for short, has got to be one of the toughest wine competitions in the world. Starting with the fact that all the tastings are done blind, and using a panel of 280 expert tasters from around the world that rated almost 17,000 wines, this is quite a feat. The crème de la crème in each category will receive the “Best of Show” designation. The producer, Valduero winery, is based in the Ribera del Duero region of Spain. This estate bottled wine is made from a selection of their best parcels of low yielding Tempranillo grapes grown along the Duero River. Because these parcels are located in both the Ribera del Duero and Toro appellations, it must carry the larger appellation of Castilla Y Leon. The environmentally friendly, hand-crafted production avoids the use of chemicals and is dry farmed without irrigation. It spent 14 months in American and European oak plus rested an additional 12 months in the bottle before being released for sale. It’s graceful, lively and charming. The colour is dark black with ripe berry scents coupled with bay leaf and oak complexity. On the palate, it’s balanced with a soft texture and more red berry fruits and a perfect pairing with a wide range of dishes.
